there isn't a place on earth

i wont go to protect animals...

Start living your dream.

Even though you have dreamt about it, everyone is afraid to make that first step. Change can be scary. Yet many of us have no hesitation to take the next steps to work, to the gym, or to mundane social functions we aren't even excited about attending anyways. And yet, we do it.

For many of us, this wasn't our dream as a child. This isn't the role we wanted to fill. And yet there you are, making your way through traffic en route to work, stopping only to look out of the windows to wonder, is this what I want to do forever?

Everyone tells you to persevere because this is just what you are supposed to do. They tell you to stay focused on maximising your retirement contributions, and saving for that mortgage you're supposed to pretend you want. Besides, there is always your retirement to go on those trips you have been dreaming about. But then you get home and turn on your computer. You go on Facebook and see pictures of friends traveling; you watch youtube videos and read tweets about people aspiring to do the things they love.

When you were younger, you wanted to help animals. In fact, I know you want to help animals because you care enough to be reading this. But other than becoming a veterinarian (which isn't a career for everyone), you wonder how you could ever help animals besides rescuing your beloved pets. Besides, wouldn't you have to move across the world, leave your friends behind, and make it on your own without any support to help animals abroad?  You might as well give up.

In the city, you got involved with animals by volunteering at shelters, or joining animal rights groups that promote local campaigns, like anti-fur campaigns and sustainable food.  You got a taste for working with animals and like-minded people, and it woke up something inside of you. Something other people told you to tuck away, because it was impractical.

But while your sitting there in your car, with a Starbucks in your right hand and steering wheel on your left, you still feel that urge. You cant wait to get home to your rescued pet because they make you feel alive, connected, and appreciated.

Well guess what? YOU CAN HELP ANIMALS and YOU CAN LIVE YOUR DREAM. And you can start right NOW.

Let me introduce myself.

My name is Erika, and I remember the first time I climbed on board that first plane to help animals abroad. I remember people telling me by leaving, my retirement savings would suffer. By taking trips to help animals abroad, it meant I must have had an unsustainable lifestyle, because I wasn't spending my time building assets or planning for the future. That I needed a white picket fence to feel secure at home. Or that simply I was spending too much money on travel. And do you want to know the worst of all? That my relationships would suffer, and that I would never have a lifestyle conducive to bearing children. That I would have to pay to keep my belongings in storage. That I'm not an experienced traveller so it is not safe to move overseas alone.

But what they don’t understand is that I need experiences to feel secure.

I have a home. I have made many life changing relationships. I have a full-time job and money put aside for a rainy day. I have learned that as the saying goes home is where your heart is. And I didn't need to quit my job or forget about my beloved family and friends to do this.

It’s no mystery.

Since I was young, I have wanted to help animals. BIG animals, like whales, and smaller animals likes pet dogs and cats. This is what led me to become a veterinarian. I want to learn about and help all animals. Above land. Below water. Endangered. Native wildlife. I want to learn about people and their relationships with animals in different countries. I want to to show the world that by protecting land, we not only protect the flora and fauna that exist, we also protect ourselves. I want to help connect people to animals and what they choose to eat. I want to teach others what I have learned about the connection between our planets resources and sustainable food.

I don't need the tangible items that others told me to once get. I need to help animals.
